Nagel und Hammer... The Wing that values experience above all else.

–Meursault

Nagel und Hammer (German: lit. Nail and Hammer), otherwise known as N Corp., is one of the 26 Wings of the City. They are infamous for their draconian Taboos where their enforcement spreads to other Wings, along with their murderous Inquisitors who hold immense prejudice towards those with cybernetic prosthetics.

Details[]

District 14 is known for its prestigious universities and white buildings, as if they are "covered in snow." The Wing behind it is notorious for particularly harsh enforcement of its Taboos, even sending specialized Fixers to swiftly kill those outside their Nest for breaking them.

At its core, Nagel und Hammer values experience above all else and scrutinizes the idea of humanity. They have made criticisms of prosthetic use in humans, considering pain to be a necessary component of the human experience. However, this ideology is not held equally within the Wing, leading to multiple factions forming. Meursault states that the two factions within the Wing are "Nail" and "Hammer." In the extreme, the Wing's beliefs have unfortunately manifested in one faction brainwashing the Wing's employees into murderous Inquisitors who purge towns of those with prosthetics; Meursault also indicates that these Inquisitors were not a large faction within the Wing in his memory, and overall N Corp. is comparable to the other Wings, except with somewhat more "rigidness."[1]

Subdivisions[]

Golden Bough Expedition[]

Also known as "Hermann's Group", they serve as a rival expedition team working to locate the Golden Boughs for their leader's plans to "destroy every Mirror World" and "create a primordial human". Their members all have their own prior relations to at least one of the Sinners.

League of Nine Littérateurs[]

A collection of scientists and technology enthusiasts who would develop new inventions and show them off to each other in conferences; they eventually fell apart after a raid by T Corp. A new League of Nine was formed within N Corp. afterwards, backed by Hermann. Gubo would attempt to recruit the old members, or kill them if they did not join.

Inquisition[]

The N Corp. Inquisition is a subdivision of Nagel und Hammer. It consists of employees brainwashed to become cultists with Canned Experience to implement inhumane extremist beliefs of the "purity" of human flesh, turning them into insane, crusader-like zealots bearing an immense hatred for those with robotic prosthetics. With anti-prosthetic purification in their minds, their prejudice boils to the point of gleefully murdering or torturing cyborgs and even exhuming and desecrating cybernetic corpses just to nail them to the ground or walls.

This subdivision is run under a ranked hierarchy:

  • The One who Grips: the highest ranking among the group, and their cult leader. Gives orders to other Inquisitors, who follow them unconditionally with religious zeal.
  • The One Who Shall Grip: The Second highest rank among the group, and important to The One who Grips.
  • The Großhammer: the second-in-command inquisitor, personally ordered by The One who Grips themselves to deliver justice upon those they deemed heretics.
  • Mittelhammers: the third-in-command inquisitor.
  • Kleinhammers: the second lowest pawn for an inquisitor.

Taboo Hunters[]

There are a total of 14 Taboos in N Corp.'s District. If any one of these Taboos are violated, a Taboo Hunter will be dispatched to swiftly kill all offenders. These Fixers are incredibly powerful and can easily kill even experienced combatants. So far, the only known Taboo out of the 14 is "no photography", which led to Moses confronting a Taboo Hunter named Vespa Crabro and the annihilation of Vergilius's squad.

Singularity[]

N Corp.'s actual Singularity(s) is unknown, but they are responsible for manufacturing "Canned Experience", which grants anyone who consumes them experience of certain things, even if they have no experience of such a thing prior. Once such Canned Experience, widely available across Nest N in vending machines, allows the consumer to experience suicide without actually commiting said act. According to N Corp. Großhammer Meursault and N Corp. Mittelhammer Don Quixote's Identity Stories, it's implied that these canned goods can be used for brainwashing and indoctrination to the Wing's liking.

They also have an unknown technology that was developed Yi Sang's mirror and the glass window. Through this technology, Kromer was refracted across different Mirror Worlds and witnessed another reality where Sinclair became her subsidiary.

Relationships with other Factions[]

Yurodivy[]

A Syndicate that sought to overthrow the Head, its leader Sonya is connected to one of the Sinners, Rodion. Moreover, Hermann had apparently tasked him with retrieving the Golden Bough at J Corp, though how deep their connection goes is currently unknown, given Sonya seems to also have ties with Demian's Group.

The Ring[]

The Ring kidnapped researcher Aseah, a member of the League of Nine Littérateurs from N Corp. Despite the circumstances, Aseah and Maestro Jumsoon developed a professional relationship with one another due to Jumsoon's fascination with the Mirror Worlds he could see using N Corp's glass-window, aiding in Aseah's research as the two becoming mutual partners.

Due to the Syndicate's collaboration with N Corp., rumors spread across certain Wings and Grade-1 Fixers that the Ring Finger was observing an unknown Singularity.

Wuthering Heights[]

Thanks to Nelly, Catherine became a subcontractee of N Corp and Hermann, conducting human experiments with help of Aseah and former Ring researchers by gathering human guinea pigs using Linton's name, turning them into "dough" to create "primordial humans". Following the events of Canto VI, the lab under Wuthering Heights has now become defunct.
