Jumsoon (Hangul: 점순이, Jeom-suni), was a Maestro-ranked member of the Ring. He debuts in Book2 of the prequel webcomic/web-novel Leviathan as a major antagonist.

Jumsoon and N Corp. scientist, Aseah, were responsible for kidnapping the children from Vergilius’ orphanage and subjected Lapis and Garnet to the glass window’s refraction experiments.

Appearance[]

Jumsoon is an androgynous man wearing the Ring’s signature white dress suit exposing the red spot tattoos on his chest, spreading to his neck and face. His head is topped with gray-to-black hair with red streaks, sporting a flowered hat-and-veil paired with lipstick, accentuating his effeminate figure. Signifying his Maestro-rank, he wears a three-coiled ring on his left hand’s ring finger. In combat, Jumsoon wields a red nangseon, otherwise known as a Lang xian — a multi-tipped spear with its branches attached with blades.

Due to subjecting himself with N Corp’s refraction technology, Jumsoon’s eyes occasionally glint new pupils when overcome by feelings of desire.

As a Distortion, Jumsoon transforms into a pale, grotesque, lizard-like humanoid with a reptilian tail, claws, and feet. Blue dots spread all over his white-scalled body, completely dotting his face. Retaining his human head, his dark hair is instead streaked blue, as his eyes glow with a faint indigo shine.

Literary Origin[]

Jumsoon is named after the antagonist of the short story, The Camellias (동백꽃, dongbaekkkot), by Gim Yujeong (Korean: 김유정, Hanja: 金裕貞).

Yujeong was a member of Guinhoe, or "The Circle of Nine" (Hangul: 구인회 , Hanja: 九人會), where he befriended fellow member Kim Hae-Gyeong, otherwise known by his pen name, Yi Sang. The poets bonded over their shared tuberculosis, so much so that the suggestion of mutual suicide came up between them to end their suffering. Unfortunately, the friendship ended with Yujeong's death due to the disease on 29 March 1937 — 18 days before Yi Sang's own death to TB on 17 April 1937.

Etymology[]

  • Jumsoon (점순이, Jeom-suni) is a traditionally feminine name made by combining ‘점’ (dot) with the suffix -suni (-순이), which is typically reserved for females. “Jumsoon” can be considered an English equivalent to the name “Dotty”.
  • “점순이” can be alternatively romanized as either “Jeomsun” or “Jeom-suni”.

The Camellias’s Jumsoon was a sadistic 17-year old girl and animal abuser whose father was the mareum (마름, supervisor of a tenant farm), or farmwatch, of the land the nameless narrator’s peasant family lives and works on. Historically, mareum were landlords that owned farmland but had tenant workers do all the work themselves, and thus were always portrayed as cruel, greedy villains in Korean media.

  • She relishes torturing the narrator, abusing his family’s chickens by beating a hen to the point of popping its ovaries and having her rooster cockfight with the narrator’s rooster until it was half-dead. Due to her reputation as a hard-working girl and her family’s standing, the narrator is unable to stand up to Jumsoon or risk her family kicking out his own from their land.
  • Ultimately, the story ends with the narrator killing Jumsoon’s cock in a fit of rage where she uses the incident to blackmail him into an abusive romance — manipulating him into falling in love with her.

Trivia[]

  • Jumsoon is the first Project Moon character to be based on a fictional character from a Guinhoe-related piece of media, rather than take a pen name of one the authors.
    • Samjo would come to become the second one to follow this, being named after a character of the same name from Yoo Chijin's play The Mud Hut.
  • He was a fan of the Musicians of Breman, a Syndicate appearing in Library of Ruina. His appreciation of them inspired his animal-headed human-statues gallery in District 22.
  • Despite Jumsoon being male, Garnet refers to him with the female pronoun “geunyeo” (그녀).
    • This is due to Garnet’s incorrect assumption based on Jumsoon’s feminine appearance and name.
  • The reason as to why Jumsoon is a male, art-obsessed Ring Maestro is probably a reference to the fact that Gim Yujeong was a unconvicted stalker, who was obsessed with pansori singer Park Rok-joo (박녹주).
    • Gim Yujeong’s Oedipus complex engrossed him towards older women, with his lust culminating in sending Park two different letters written in his own blood. With Gim’s death due to his pulmonary tuberculosis, Park was overcome with guilt and regretted not comforting him despite being completely innocent and undeserving of his crimes. In an unsettling way, Yujeong procured sympathy from his victim despite his abuse — in a similar way Jumsoon had done in his own short story.
