「美中不足、 好事多魔。」
Hong Lu (Hangul: 홍루, Hong Ru) is designated Sinner #6 of Limbus Company's LCB department.
Hong Lu is a giddy and naive man with a tendency for unintentionally insensitive words. He was previously affiliated with a large and wealthy family consisting of at least six members, having lived a life of sheltered luxury prior to joining Limbus Company.
Appearance[]
Hong Lu is of average height and build. He has quite the pale complexion that contrasts with his deep purple hair. His hair is very long and tied into a high ponytail with a cyan hair tie. Notably, he has heterochromia in his eyes: his right eye is a deep shade of purple, almost black, and his left eye is a bright cyan.
His clothing consists of a white long-sleeved dress shirt, mostly covered by a black, low-cut waistcoat tucked into his black belt. Tucked beneath this waistcoat is a red tie. Atop all this, Hong Lu wears a long black coat that reaches just above his ankles. The long sleeves of this coat have accents of red at the end of each sleeve. Inside of this coat, there seems to be a red color. This coat has his Sinner number on her left, and a metal pin inscribed with writing on his right. Finally, he wears long black pants and shoes of the same color.
Personality[]
Hong Lu stands out among the Sinners of Limbus Company due to his distinctive demeanor, which is characterized by an almost childlike curiosity and wonder. This contrasts sharply with the hardened, often cynical outlooks of his fellow Sinners, who have been shaped by the harsh realities of life in the City. Hong Lu's behavior suggests that he was once insulated from the grim and brutal nature of the world around his, possibly leading a sheltered existence before his time with Limbus Company. However, his background is not without its own complexities and hardships, despite the initial impression of naivety.
The sheltered life Hong Lu likely led may have provided his with a certain innocence, but it also seems to have been a double-edged sword. His family dynamics were far from nurturing; instead, they were marked by betrayal and manipulation. The constant undercurrents of deceit within his family forced Hong Lu to remain vigilant, even within his own home, and likely contributed to his intense physical training. This upbringing shaped his into someone who could endure and perhaps even excel in physical challenges, yet it left his with a certain emotional detachment or obliviousness when it comes to social interactions.
Hong Lu’s lack of social tact is a defining trait that often places his at odds with his fellow Sinners. His questions and comments, while often innocent or well-meaning, can come across as insensitive or naive, particularly when compared to the more jaded perspectives of those who have been hardened by life in the City. This lack of social grace suggests that Hong Lu has not had much experience in navigating the complex social norms and unspoken rules that govern interactions in such a ruthless environment. Despite this, he does not seem to be fazed by the reactions of others. Whether he is genuinely unaware of the impact of his words or simply chooses to disregard the negativity, Hong Lu maintains a consistent demeanor that is unshaken by the harshness around his.
This outward obliviousness, however, does not fully encapsulate the depth of Hong Lu's character. His behavior in Canto IV: The Unchanging reveals a previously unseen layer of emotional intelligence. This is most notably demonstrated in his portrayal of Young-ji, a character from Yi Sang’s past. Yi Sang himself acknowledges that Hong Lu's interpretation of Young-ji captures the gentleness and heartfelt nature that defined his during his time with the League. This portrayal suggests that Hong Lu possesses a keen ability to understand and empathize with the emotions of others, even if he does not always express this understanding in conventional ways.
Moreover, Hong Lu’s observations of Yi Sang during the events of Canto IV highlight his perceptiveness. As the Sinners delve into Yi Sang's past, Hong Lu makes astute comments on his mental state and the struggles he has faced. His remark, "I'm thinking that he may have been calling for help all along," is particularly telling. It indicates that, beneath his outward curiosity and seemingly carefree attitude, Hong Lu is capable of deep emotional insight. He recognizes the signs of Yi Sang's internal turmoil and acknowledges his need for support, something that others might overlook.
This newfound emotional awareness adds a layer of intriguing complexity to Hong Lu's character. It suggests that his initial portrayal as a naive and curious individual may be a surface-level impression, masking a deeper understanding of the human condition. Hong Lu's ability to connect with and understand the emotions of others, despite his lack of social tact, hints at a more sophisticated inner world than he lets on. This duality—his outward innocence coupled with an underlying emotional intelligence—makes Hong Lu a unique and intriguing character within the narrative of Limbus Company.
Weapon[]
Hong Lu wields the long guandao "太虛幻境" (pinyin: tài xū huàn jìng; lit. 'Iltuahsory Land of Great Void'), often one handed, on his right hand. The glaive appears unnatural, with one side having a 3/4 cut circle and rimmed with rings across the portion after the cut hole.

Trivia[]
- Hong Lu's character icon represents a jade-colored eye surrounded by clouds.
- Hong Lu is represented by the 🔮 emoji[2], with the crystal likely referring to his left eye.
- Hong Lu's particulars are listed as "bachelor" and "sheltered".
- Hong Lu is based on the protagonist of Dream of the Red Chamber, Jia Baoyu ("贾宝玉"), a youth who is born as the incarnation of a magical piece of jade, to fulfill its wish to learn about humanity.
- Hong Lu's name, 鸿璐[3] (pinyin: hóng lù), is derived from both the name of the main character of Dream of the Red Chamber and the title of his source material, "紅樓夢" (pinyin: hóng lóu mèng). The meaning of the name ("precious jade") remains unchanged, but the pronunciation of his name becomes very similar to the pronunciation of "Red Chamber" (紅樓, pinyin: hóng lóu). Despite this, on his splash art his name is still written as "紅樓" (hóng lóu).
- In Canto II, Hong Lu mentions that he did not get along with his younger sibling as a child, and that his younger sibling liked to "cheat and grouch if things didn’t go as desired." This references a scene in Dream of the Red Chamber in which Jia Baoyu's younger half-brother Jia Huan cheats at a game during his introduction.
- In Intervallo IV, Hong Lu mentions one of his aunts being fond of District 23's purple salt. This appears to be a reference to Baoyu's paternal aunt Jia Min, whose husband Lin Ruhai is a wealthy official in the Yangzhou salt commission.
- The quote 「美中不足、 好事多魔。」 (pinyin: "Měi zhōng bù zú, hǎo shì duō mó.") is told to a stone called the Spirit Stone (pinyin: líng shí) by a Taoist immortal, a type of celestial being, going by the title of "Second Immortal Master" or "第二仙人" (pinyin: dì èr xiān rén) to discourage it from exploring the human world. The Spirit Stone was first found and worn by an adolescent Jia Baoyu as an ordinary yet strange stone, which later developed sentience due to its connection with him and transformed into a jade pendant, eventually being named "宝玉" (pinyin: bǎo yù), sharing a name with Jia Baoyu whose first name means "precious jade" as mentioned above.
- The idiom literally translates to "Beauty amidst flaws, good things come with demons.". It means that even "true beauty" will contain "flaws", as truly "good things" will inevitably come with so-called "demons", ruining it, turning joy to sorrow and causing tragedy to occur. This is essentially a warning for people to prepare for the worst, especially during times of peace. [4]
- Many people question the usage of "魔" (pinyin: mó), as opposed to the more common idiom using "磨" (pinyin: mó), and due to their shared pronounciation people thought this was a typo, which it is not. "魔" means demon and "磨" means hardship.
- Like all of the Sinners, Hong Lu voiced a "Document Excerpt" Youtube short.
- Hong Lu wears a metal name tag as opposed to the ID badge that the the majority of the other Sinners use, a trait he shares with Don Quixote and Outis. This is likely due to the name "Hong Lu" being one of two names he uses, with the other name, which his family uses when referring to him, being "Baoyu".
