Overview |
“ How are you treating your present, my son?
I didn't invest in you just to see you in such a state. ”
Hermann (Hangul: 헤르만, Hereuman) is an overarching antagonist introduced in Canto I: The Outcast, and was the former head scientist of the Old G Corp. Responsible for augmenting the G Corp. soldiers with their fishbowl heads, she fancied her prized experimentee Gregor as her "son".
As of now, Hermann is currently a director[1] of N Corp., being one of the few who escaped scot-free from the consequences of G Corp.'s collapse after the Smoke War. In her new position, her team is currently in opposition with Limbus Company to retrieve the Golden Boughs within the ruined Lobotomy Corporation facilities.
Appearance[]
Hermann's appearance is that of a middle-aged, tall woman. She has pale skin and olive-green eyes. In contrast to her pale complexion, Hermann sports dark, almost black makeup which consists of lipstick adorning her upper lip, dark eyeshadow, and eyeliner. Hermann has wavy, dark brown hair that sways to one side, dropping just beneath her chin.
Hermann wears a dark navy-blue uniform with red-accented lines, a white, collared shirt, and a bright red tie. The first part of her uniform is a large, navy-blue overcoat that is draped over her shoulders and extends down just below her knees. The second part is a single piece, navy-blue collared dress, with silver buckles on the lapel and silver chains connecting small buttons on the skirt. The dress is separated by a thick belt of similar color, with a large silver buckle and her ID tag attached to the loops.
Hermann also wears navy-blue cuffed boots and darker blue, almost black leggings, and a dark turtleneck underneath her shirt.
Personality[]
Always calm and condescending, behind her serene expression is a cunning intelligence that is ruthless to anyone that stands in her way. Effortlessly confident, Hermann is a cold, calculating figure like most Wing higher-ups in the City.
As a former war-mongerer, she is the one responsible for gene-splicing the hapless feathers of Old G Corp. and ruining countless lives in the Smoke War. She maintains a mocking, yet affectionate relationship with her son and prized experiment, Gregor, whom she used as a poster boy for the war and continues to run his life—even after escaping her clutches.
A patient sort, she is a master manipulator and orchestrates numerous ploys the LCB face on their hunt for the Golden Boughs. Arranging ‘chance’ encounters between the Sinners and their past compatriots or foes, Hermann continuously prepares her chess game solely for her own interests.
Ultimately, she seeks to destroy every mirror world; for what reasons as to why, are currently unknown.
Story[]
Leviathan[]
Hermann is briefly mentioned by Vergilius after mistaking Gubo for her when the later claimed to be the director of N Corp.
Limbus Company[]
“ I never asked for this… Not once… ”
Canto I: The Outcast[]
Because of Gregor’s resonance with the Golden Bough within the depths of Lobotomy Corporation’s facility, Branch D-02, he experienced several flashbacks to his past — such as Hermann’s experiments when she was overseeing his development.
In one of these memories, Gregor reminisces about his 15th birthday, as Hermann congratulates her ‘son’ for slicing apples with the ‘gift’ she gave him: his fishbowl head. Initially, he remained stubborn and refused to slice anything for the tests, but being goaded on by Hermann, eventually relented.
These simple, repetitive experiments set up by Hermann occupied most of Gregor’s childhood, breaking down his will to prepare him to become Old G Corp’s posterboy for the upcoming war coming to pass.
Midst of the Smoke War[]
As the Sinners delved deeper into the branch facility, the Golden Bough manifested the landscape of 70 days into the Smoke War from the memories of Gregor.
Filled to the brim with recollected Old G Corp. soldiers, eventually, hands manicured nails descended from the sky to squash any and every combatant to death. The Sinners could only keep running from these crushing palms, as the situation seemed hopeless.
Manifested from the fathoms of Gregor’s ego, these arms were representations of Hermann’s own hands, alongside her grip that continues to leash him even after the war. Upon realizing what these hands meant to him, Gregor concluded that the only way out of the situation was to allow themselves to be caught by them, as he knew he’ll never be free from Hermann’s grasp.
The Reunion[]
“ I’m Hermann. We’ll be seeing each other often. The reason being…
We—need—those Boughs; and you—are capable of finding them.
You—won’t die; but we—will kill you. ”
Hermann makes her first physical debut, along with fellow Director Gubo and Jia Huan, when confronting the Sinners in Branch D-02. After dispatching the Golden Apple and retrieving the Golden Bough. She introduces herself and announces her group's goals of collecting every Golden Bough, but not without threatening the lives of the Sinners if they dare stand in her way.
“ You should at least finish unwrapping what I gave you.
That little arm isn’t all there is to it. ”
Hermann then greets her son, Gregor, once more; condescendingly teasing her prized experiment in his current pitiful state, lamenting how Gregor wouldn't use what she gave her to its fullest potential.
The N Corp. team confiscates the Golden Bough from the Sinners as Jia Huan uses his abilities to knock all of them unconscious with a clap of his hands.
Canto II: The Unloving[]
After leaving Branch J-03, Sonya meets with Hermann in the Backstreets of District 10 to discuss how the Golden Bough retrieval went.
It had been Hermann who proposed the idea of showing Rodion an idealized world with the hope it would convince her to rejoin the Yurodiviye, and as a result, let the Golden Bough fall into their hands. He confesses that he is glad that the plan didn't work, because it meant that Rodion hasn't changed since he had last seen her, and then asks if she is going to scold him for failing the mission.
Though Hermann praises Sonya for his proactivity to set out to achieve his goals, she expresses disappointment on how he still allowed the Sinners to retrieve the Bough themselves. Still, she decides not to dwell on the failure, commenting that she will remember Sonya's considerations on Rodion's behavior in mind when planning their next course of action, and concludes their meeting.
Canto IV: The Unchanging[]
Part 3 — Reminisced League of Nine[]
Hermann makes a brief reappearance in the past reminisced in the fathoms of the League of Nine’s egos, as part of the memories pulled from Yi Sang's past in the dungeon generated by the Golden Bough.
The Sinners witness a flashback to the second iteration of the League of Nine Littérateurs, founded under Hermann in the Nest of N Corp. After the first iteration’s dissolution, with many of its members either having been captured or fleeing from T Corp’s forces, Glubo, Aseah, and Yi Sang were eventually granted sanctuary and recruited into N Corp’s fold.
Assigning Glubo to become Yi Sang’s ward, after the events at the League threw him in a state of despair, Hermann desired Yi Sang to continually research and refine his mirror, making the aim of the research clear: to find a way to destroy every Mirror World in existence. Upon Yi Sang's initial refusal, Hermann was annoyed at his stubborness, but claimed to have other ways to reach her goals, and to have only treated him with courtesy out of respect for Glubo.
Canto V: The Evil Defining[]
Part 3[]
After the Sinners killed the Pallid Whale and left her to die, Ahab miraculously survived the whale’s destruction, drifting on the remains of the foe she was robbed of slaying. While muttering her hopeless delusions and aimlessly floating on the Great Lake, Ahab was eventually rescued by Hermann and her fleet of battleships.
After Ahab questioned if Hermann was here just to mock her, the N Corp. director gave her a proposition: if Ahab joined her, she would allow the captain to kill any and every Pallid Whale across the countless Mirror Worlds. Reasoning that it was simply just a "single" Pallid Whale out of potentially countless others, Hermann would give Ahab her purpose again.
All Hermann asks of Ahab was her “staunch determination and conviction”.
Canto VI: The Heartbreaking[]
Part 3[]
At some point in time, Hermann would decide to make use of the Wuthering Heights manor for her studies on the Mirror Worlds. She would teach Nelly about Mirror Worlds, leaving the woman a mirror, and cultivate the subsequent despair Nelly was thrown into. The mirror would allow for Catherine to commune with Every Catherine, beginning a spiral into the manor's demise.
Hermann herself would visit the manor within time, encouraging the creation of the laboratory in the manor's basement, that would be managed by N Corp. staff, including Aseah and former members of the Ring's Pointillist branch, and making a deal with Catherine to allow Every Catherine to visit her Mirror World, requiring the use of two Golden Boughs. In exchange, Hermann wished to utilize the laboratory to create a pure and uncontaminated dough, which Catherine accepts. Eventually Hermann put Catherine into her coffin, promising the summoning of Every Catherine, as well as the arrival of a Heathcliff that exists solely for Catherine.
Abilities[]
Hermann is a prestigious scientist who lead the research on the bio-augmentations of the Old G Corp. soldiers. Because of her brilliance, she was one of the lucky few who made it out unscathed from G Corp.'s collapse after the Smoke War, becoming a Director in N Corp. years later.
