Overview |
Heathcliff (Hangul: 히스클리프, hiseukheulliphe) is designated Sinner #7 of Limbus Company's LCB department.
Heathcliff is a brash and action-oriented man with a strong, dedicated spirit. He was previously affiliated with Wuthering Heights, having grown up alongside the Earnshaws and later working for the Dead Rabbits Syndicate prior to joining Limbus Company.
He is the focus character of Canto VI: The Heartbreaking.
Appearance[]
Heathcliff is depicted as being a tall and well-built man with messy dark brown hair parted on the right side of his head, he possesses sharp, glaring eyes that are a shade of dark purplish-blue, his eyebrows are the same shade as his hair and are both slit, his right eyebrow having two slits and his left just one, he has a dark skin complexion with an excessive number of scars littering his arms and going all the way up to his cheeks, his work uniform is lacking the typical long black leather jacket, instead wearing a shoulder holster which is strapped around his chest and shoulders, with his ID hanging below his right breast, the sleeves of his Limbus Company white T-shirt are rolled up to his elbows, he wears a red tie, black suit pants with a black waist belt and dark gray shoes, his weapon of choice is a long metal bat with bandages wrapped around the handle and the word "REVENGE" written in sharp letters on the barrel, which Heathcliff holds in his right hand and rests over his shoulder, after the events of Canto VI, he refashioned the bat to spell out "REMEMBER", notably, although difficult to catch, Heathcliff wears a ring on the pointer finger of his right hand.
Heathcliff's imposing and rugged appearance reflects both his tumultuous past and his formidable presence. Standing tall and well-built, his physicality alone commands attention and respect. His messy dark brown hair, parted on the right side, gives him a somewhat unkempt yet deliberate look, suggesting a man who is too preoccupied with more pressing matters to concern himself with meticulous grooming. This untamed hair frames his sharp, glaring eyes, which are an unusual and striking shade of dark purplish-blue. These eyes, often piercing and intense, can seem to look right through a person, revealing his depth and the weight of his experiences.
His eyebrows, matching the dark brown hue of his hair, add to the severity of his gaze. Both eyebrows bear slits—his right eyebrow has two slits, while his left has one—each mark possibly a symbol of past confrontations or significant events in his life. These slits not only contribute to his hardened and battle-worn look but also serve as a unique identifier.
Heathcliff's dark skin complexion is accentuated by an excessive number of scars, which litter his arms and extend up to his cheeks. Each scar tells a story of survival and conflict, making it clear that he is no stranger to violence and hardship. These scars are a testament to his resilience and the battles he has fought, both physically and emotionally.
In terms of attire, Heathcliff's work uniform deviates from the typical long black leather jacket associated with his peers. Instead, he opts for a more functional and less encumbering outfit. He wears a shoulder holster strapped around his chest and shoulders, with his ID hanging below his right breast, signifying his affiliation with the Limbus Company. His white T-shirt, bearing the company's insignia, has its sleeves rolled up to his elbows, revealing his scarred forearms and highlighting his readiness for action. The red tie he wears adds a splash of color to his otherwise monochromatic outfit, perhaps symbolizing his passion or a hidden depth of emotion.
His black suit pants are practical and professional, held up by a black waist belt, and his dark gray shoes complete the ensemble. This attire, while not flashy, is efficient and allows for ease of movement, which is essential for his line of work.
Heathcliff's weapon of choice is a long metal bat, a brutal and effective instrument of his will. The handle of the bat is wrapped in bandages, suggesting frequent use and perhaps a personal touch. The word "REVENGE" is inscribed in sharp letters on the barrel, a clear indication of his motivation and driving force. This weapon, held in his right hand and often resting over his shoulder, is as much a part of his identity as his scars and slits. Following the events of Canto VI, he refashioned the bat to spell out "REMEMBER," signaling a shift in his focus or a new chapter in his quest.
A small yet significant detail is the ring he wears on the pointer finger of his right hand. Though it is easy to miss, this ring could hold personal significance, a memento of someone important or a symbol of a vow he has taken.
Overall, Heathcliff's appearance is a vivid tapestry of his life story, blending elements of raw power, personal history, and relentless determination.
Personality[]
Heathcliff is an exceptionally short-tempered and abrasive individual, electing violence as a first resort, and aggression as a way of life. He is overly impulsive and quick to anger, with consequences for those involved. However, over the course of several Cantos, a considerably calmer, more considerate, and selfless side of his personality would come to light.
Originally, Heathcliff comes off as remarkably hostile. He expresses a loathing for being ordered around and is as willing to talk back to his allies as he is his enemies. In a similar vein, Heathcliff claims to despise complicated speech on several occasions. He prefers people prove themselves through actions rather than words. As such, the negative impressions he gives are often in the form of physical violence. One of his first interactions with Dante even consists of him beating Sinclair near-death for suggesting he go easy on the manager.
Despite this, the majority of Heathcliff's antagonism is in response to belittlement from others. In actuality, Heathcliff is not often one to start fights uncalled-for; rather, his fits of rage are but an over-the-top reaction to bullying and ridicule. He is fully capable of engaging in grounded conversation. Constant jabs from Ishmael and Faust simply hit a sore spot, as Heathcliff demonstrates a clear aversion to being looked down on.
On the other side of the spectrum, Heathcliff uses action in show of loyalty and consideration. And as the Sinners got to know each other, he began to treat the group like friends, in spite of their tendency to mistreat him. This included things like stepping up against N Corp. Inquisitors after they threatened Dante, or helping Ishmael break out of the pallidification. Despite harboring self-consciousness surrounding his intellect, Heathcliff also demonstrates an ability to think on his feet, often to a successful end. He has on several occasions come in clutch for others due to his fast-acting nature.
He would eventually become more willing to rely on verbal communication as the others respected him more in return. Intervallo III: Miracle in District 20 sees Heathcliff open up about his situation to Dante and Don Quixote when they are willing to listen and treat him with dignity. A wide array of conversations in Canto VI: The Heartbreaking cement this pattern in behavior: Heathcliff will attack those who provoke him, but is inclined to calmly converse with those who take him seriously. He is even prone to showing outright charity to these people, forgiving and thanking Nelly for all she's done for him after finding out about her betrayal. His former maid, who knew him better than most anyone, would later describe Heathcliff as a "good, kindhearted boy".
Anything involving Catherine consistently shows the most vulnerable sides of Heathcliff. Though still a brash, violent, and bad-tempered person, he is also one with regrets, fragility, selflessness, and a heart holding a lot of love for his favorite person in the world. Heathcliff mourns her grief with sincerity, and grows genuinely bashful when the topic of their relationship comes up. He shows an unbending will to do anything for those he holds dear.
Post Canto VI, Heathcliff continues to wield his bat to strike against those who stand in his way, but now with determined purpose instead of meaningless anger.
Heathcliff's "Cathycliff" persona encapsulates his profound internal turmoil and unresolved grief stemming from his intense love for Catherine. This identity reveals Heathcliff's complex emotional landscape, where his outward aggression and hostility often mask a deep vulnerability and longing. His relationship with Catherine is the cornerstone of his existence, driving him to both great acts of loyalty and moments of intense despair. Cathycliff symbolizes Heathcliff's struggle to reconcile his fierce love for Catherine with the pain of her absence, embodying a duality of passionate devotion and profound anguish. Through this persona, Heathcliff navigates his grief, often oscillating between fierce determination and moments of poignant introspection, reflecting the enduring impact Catherine has on his heart and soul.
Weapon[]
His preferred weapon is a large metal bat with the word "REVENGE" written on it in white paint. After Canto VI, he changed the word of the metal bat to "REmember", scribbling "VENGE" out with "member". This is also reflected on his LCB Sinner battle sprites.
- As Shi Assoc. South Section 5 Heathcliff, he wields an odachi as his main weapon. The blade has a noticeably bright red hue as if it has been tainted with human blood permanently.
- As R Corp. 4th Pack Rabbit Heathcliff, he wields the standard-given Charge Rifle and Dagger as his main combat weapons.
- As N Corp. Kleinhammer Heathcliff, he wields a large hammer and a nail.
- As Lobotomy E.G.O::Sunshower Heathcliff, his appearance is similar to that of those who utilizes Drifting Fox E.G.O, specifically Dongbaek, along with sporting the same whitish-green umbrella to fight.
- As Seven Assoc. South Section 4 Heathcliff, he wields a standard Seven Association longsword.
- As The Pequod Harpooneer Heathcliff, he wields a large harpoon head that has been securely fastened to his right arm with rope.
- As Öufi Assoc. South Section 3 Heathcliff, he wields a standard Öufi Association polearm.
- As The Erlking, he wields both a spiked bat and a barbed great sword.
Background[]
In his introduction, Heathcliff states that he used to be "a professional wrecker for people and property alike", and a passing comment he makes in Intervallo I directly reveals that he has been part of a Syndicate. He notes that it was done out of his own free will, and not because anyone told him to do so.[1] This was later confirmed to be true at Canto VI: The Heartbreaking due to his past.
In Canto II, when Faust mentions the historical background of Nest J's Backstreets, Heathcliff responds with "H, history...? Are you seriously about to lecture us here and now...? I was never told about any mandatory education when I joined this company!". This may suggest that Heathcliff never received any form of education either by circumstance or choice, this would align with his bias to straightforward approaches over complexity, and his dislike for complicated words.
Trivia[]
- Heathcliff is represented by the "⛈️" Emoji.[2]
- Like all of the Sinners, Heathcliff voiced a "Document Excerpt" Youtube short.
- He is familiar with the Christmas Carol "Silent Night, Holy Night", saying he used to hear it a lot during snowy days.
- Heathcliff has a very distinct British Cockney accent, often using slang in his speech.
