Overview |
“ Why can't the people I love... also love one another? ”
Catherine Earnshaw (Hangul: 캐서린 언쇼, Kaeseolin Eonsyo), potentially also known as Cathy (Hangul: 캐시, Kaesi), may have been the only daughter of the Earnshaw family, ex-wife of Linton, and the owner of Wuthering Heights, where she was possibly raised alongside Heathcliff and her brother Hindley. She might be a major character in Canto VI: The Heartbreaking.
Theoretically the woman behind Heathcliff's burning vengeance and relentless pursuit of self-improvement. After receiving an invitation from Wuthering Heights, Heathcliff arrives expecting a reunion with Catherine. However, upon arrival, he discovers it could be her funeral he's attending and that he may have been chosen to receive her Golden Bough.
Seeking closure for the one he loved most, she desperately pursues answers regarding her death and the mysterious circumstances surrounding it.
Appearance[]
Catherine could have been portrayed as a woman of short stature with an average build and a fair complexion. She might have had upper-back-length dark blonde hair, mildly curly at the tips, and chocolate brown eyes that often gaze sideways. Catherine is possibly praised as the "most beautiful person in the world" by Heathcliff, and her presence captivates the Edgar Family at first sight.
Her typical attire consists of a floor-length layered ballgown dress. The bottom layer is frilled and white, while the top layer is warm brown with gold trim and floral embroidery. The dress features a high collar adorned with a brown cravat connected to it, embellished with a shiny gold pendant. Catherine also wears a gold, rounded necklace, possibly an award for her career as an inventor.
The sleeves of her dress are layered, with the upper arm portion being large, puffy, and frilled, while the rest of the sleeve is form-fitting and extends to her wrists before slightly flaring outwards. Catherine wears dark brown gloves and heels.
During her childhood, Catherine's hairstyle might have remained mostly unchanged, with the addition of a few stray white flowers. She wears a long, frilled white dress with a loose belt around the waist, featuring swirls and miscellaneous embroideries. Additionally, she dons a thin, yellow ribbon on the collar, adorned with a green pearl.
Mirror Worlds[]
She potentially had several alternate designs in the shown Mirror World variations with her and Heathcliff. Some of these are:
- A work outfit resembling Ishmael's sailor design, color-swapped with a thick purple jacket featuring numerous pockets on the sleeves, paired with a desaturated lavender collared shirt. She wears with a purple metal headband equipped with a plug-in wire attachment to her shirt. Her hair is notably shoulder-length instead of reaching her back. This outfit appears in the universe with Pequod Harpooner Heathcliff.
- An open white collared labcoat with two pens in the side pocket, and buttoned sleeves, with a black turtleneck underneath. Her hair is in a high ponytail in this iteration, reaching mid-back. Given the circumstances with Dongbaek and Yi Sang, there is a possibility that Catherine is intended to mirror Yi Sang in this universe. This outfit appears in the universe with Sunshower Heathcliff.
- A school uniform with short sleeves, a collared white blouse, and a blue ribbon. Her hair is in a half-up style, with the rest being in a crown braid, and she has an ahoge on the top of her head. This outfit appears in the universe where Heathcliff is a schoolboy.
- A brown medieval nun outfit with a tall veil that conceals all of her hair. The nun uniform is adorned with gold trim and features gold spots on the edges. This outfit appears in the universe where Heathcliff is a knight.
- A fancy green dress resembling her regular outfit but in sage green. The collared dress is paired with a pistachio-green cravat adorned with a gold pendant. Catherine accessorizes with a green tea party hat featuring a moss green ribbon and multiple feathers. The rest of her hair is styled into a low bun ending at her ears. This outfit appears in the universe where Heathcliff wears a black suit, possibly from the Kurokumo Clan.
- A distorted version of Catherine, where her hair transforms into shadowy hands covering her eyes, chin, and shoulders. These hands extend up her arms and radiate off her back, accompanied by red lines on her body and sharp black claw hands.
- Every Catherine, a monochromatic and transparent ghost version of herself, with the tips of her hair fading off like embers. This outfit appears in the Erlking Heathcliff universe.
Personality[]
As a child, Catherine was quite adventurous and reclusive, and she often encouraged Heathcliff to break the rules while playing with her such as the day she wanted to investigate the Edgar Family mansion. She had a passion for inventing things from a young age and dreamed of becoming a grand inventor one day. At times Catherine felt trapped in Wuthering Heights and once told Heathcliff of how it saddened her to see the feathers in their pillows, as birds were meant to fly free instead of be killed for their beauty. Catherine had a love of riddles and was terrified of the dark and the ghost of her mother she saw in the halls of Wuthering Heights.
As she grew older Catherine fell in love with Heathcliff and made all major life choices with him in mind, although her perception of their relationship was warped by a disbelief that he could love her in return. For the sake of one day being able to help Heathcliff, she decided it would be best to marry Linton despite not having romantic feelings for him, using him and his love for her to further her own goals. After being gifted a mirror that allowed her to see into the Mirror Worlds, her perception of herself changed drastically as she came to understand that in none of these worlds was there a version of Heathcliff and Catherine who were both happy. Catherine hated herself for bringing such suffering to the man that she loved to the point of being willing to give up her life, and the lives of many others, for a chance at giving him happiness.

Trivia[]
- Catherine could be based on both Catherine Earnshaw and Catherine Linton from Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë. Her character and relationship with Heathcliff theoretically mixed elements of both characters from the novel and their respective relationships with Heathcliff and Hareton Earnshaw.
- Catherine's hypothetical interactions with the mirror she could have spoken to Every Catherine through were possibly inspired by a section of the novel in which Catherine Earnshaw falls into delirium while pregnant with Edgar Linton's child. She stays in varying states of delirium until her death and during one of her most intense episodes she fails to recognize her own reflection in a mirror, concerning Nelly who has to cover the mirror to prevent Catherine from growing more distressed. This interaction happens just two months before Catherine's death, similar to how Catherine in Limbus Company may have begun to make plan to end her life shortly after meeting Every Catherine.
- The title of the fourth Season, "Clear all Cathy," could be paying homage to a meme within the Korean community. It stems from the similarity in pronunciation between "Clear All Cache" and "Clear All Cathy" in Hangul, as both words are spelled identically. Despite its meme origins, the reference to "Clear All Cache" might have become a crucial plot point in the finale of Canto VI.
- Following Canto VI, with Catherine's possible erasure from the universe, any mention of her from Heathcliff's Mirror World selves might be censored with "⬜⬜⬜⬜⬜" and when her name is spoken aloud, it can be replaced by static.
- After the events of Canto VI, the only characters that appear to possibly remember Catherine are Heathcliff, Dante, and Demian. The reasons behind Demian's awareness of her remain unknown, although it might be connected to his Mark of Cain.
