Overview |
The Outcast is the first Story Chapter in Limbus Company.
Summary[]
The LCB enters District 4 to locate the Golden Bough hidden within the old Lobotomy Corp's facility in the Backstreets, fighting against random criminals to fuel Mephistopheles. Along the way, the LCB is revealed to have hired three Fixers to help guide them through the facility, among them is Yuri, a former employee of the L Corp. Branch they are going to investigate.
They eventually reach their destination, but it turns out that it is not only overrun with Abnormalities, but also remnants of the Old G Corp, who were augmented to sport bug-like features, similar to Gregor. After surviving that and reaching the lowest level of the area, the bough resonates with Gregor, creating a looping simulation of the Smoke War that Gregor fought in. After several loops, giant hands belonging to Gregor's mother, Hermann, begin to descend from the sky in the dreamscape. Gregor quickly realizes that the way to escape the loops is to let the hands crush them and the group allows themselves to be taken by the hands. Upon leaving the loop, the Sinners and Yuri find a containment unit with an Abnormality inside that has seemingly eaten the Golden Bough.
After the Sinners appear to defeat the Abnormality, Yuri approaches it to take the Golden Bough. The Abnormality then unexpectedly consumes Yuri and generates a new form. After defeating the Abnormality a second time, the Golden Bough is exposed. Gregor is unable to kill it and take the Bough due to it taking Yuri's form, but it is killed by another group of people who are also seeking the Golden Boughs. This group is lead by the previously mentioned Hermann, and also includes Hong Lu's brother, Jia Huan, and Yi Sang's former compatriot, Gubo. Hermann's group knock out the Sinners and take the Golden Bough from the Abnormality's corpse before leaving. The mission a failure, the Sinners somberly head to their next destination.
Synopsis[]
1-1: Vroom-vroom[]
Pre-Battle[]
The Canto begins with Charon crushing another group of hooligans with Mephistopheles. The noise wakes Dante, who decided to ask Gregor about their destination. Gregor, similarly uninformed, decides to ask Charon about their current destination, getting the answer that they are currently heading towards District 4.
Don Quixote jumps at the mention of District 4, stating it to be the home of a Fixer with the title "The Grass Maiden". Heathcliff, annoyed by the noises, interjects with rude demands of silence. Ishmael notes that Heathcliff is being making more noise than Don Quixote did before in his demands, and Dante wonders if it is the time to intervene as the two shows signs of getting into a quarrel.
Before Dante can act, Ryōshū beheads both Heathcliff and Ishmael due to their being annoying, and Don Quixote impales Ryōshū's head as an enactment of justice. Vergilius intervenes at this point, assigning cleaning duty to the three deceased and Don Quixote, and asks Dante to "wind back the clock" as they did in 0-1.
As Dante seemed clueless as to how to revive the dead Sinners, Vergilius requested Faust to guide them. Following Faust's guide, Dante closed their eyes, and found themself in front of a great gate, behind which the screams of the damned are audible. Dante opened the door and extracted the Sinners from within, experiencing the pain the dead suffered right before their death in the process.
Back in the Mephistopheles, the revived Heathcliff prepared to take his death back on Ryōshū. Dante protested, but Heathcliff refused to listen, caving in Sinclair's head when he tried to speak for Dante. Vergilius intervenes again, laying down "rule number one" of the bus as "do not let [him] hear weapons clashing inside the bus", the punishment being pain worse than death upon the miscreant. Vergilius then requests Dante to wind the clock again to revive Sinclair, though he grows threatening at Dante's hesitation. Outis stands in defense of Dante, though further conflict is avoided by Dante's final giving in and reviving Sinclair. The story episode ends on a uneasy note.
1-2: Dance Time[]
Pre-Battle[]
Don Quixote breaks up the uneasiness ending the last story episode with an inquiry to the second rule. Vergilius replies, after staring at Ryōshū lighting another cigarette, that the second rule is "[no littering] the bus floor with cigarettes". The bus falls quiet again for a while.
Vergilius then notices that the bus is too quiet--the roar of the engine is nowhere to be heard. Inquiring into the reason of that, Charon replies that the bus is low on fuel. Vergilius sees this as a chance to lighten up the mood of the bus after the previous incident, and commands Charon to open up the bus's headlights. After attracting some Hooligans, he ushers the Sinners off the bus, with the final instruction to leave the Rats near death, not dead.
1-3: The Bus Deck[]
Pre-Battle[]
The Sinners and Dante watch as the bus literally "chews" up the dying hooligans. Ryōshū seems to be savouring the view, while Sinclair is visibly distressed. Dante took the chance to inquire if Sinclair really joined the company of his own accord, though only getting a vague response suggesting that he did join the company of his own accord.
1-4: Enkephalin[]
Pre-Battle[]
Dante inquires into the energy source of the bus, wondering whether it chews up live people because it runs on blood or proteins. This leads Faust into a lengthy lecture about enkephalin and other biomatter-derived fuel as the energy source of Mephistopheles, and how the hooligans were taken live because the enkephalin extraction process of the bus is more efficient with living nerve tissue.
1-5: Yuri[]
Pre-Battle[]
Vergilius calls out to the Sinners to finish up with fueling the bus, stating that they are expecting a guest "any time now". Soon, a woman called Yuri shows up, looking for the "people from Limbus Company". She promptly introduces herself as a former Lobotomy Corporation employee, and it is revealed to Dante that their current destination is a buried L Corp. branch in District 4----specifically, their goal is a Golden Bough--the "essence" of L Corp.'s technology.
The rest of the episode is concerned with other aspects of the former L Corp.'s operation, such as Abnormalities ("monsters" that are exploited by Lobotomy Corporation to produce energy which now runs wild in its abandoned facilities), E.G.O (weapons and armor used by L Corp. employees to aid them in their management of Abnormalities), and Enkephalin (the result of L Corp.'s management of Abnormalities; a form of clean energy). Some discussion of Yuri's current state of employment is also touched upon, including her current status as a contract worker and the likely rewards of this facility run being an extended contract with the Fixer Office she is working with.
1-6: Map[]
Pre-Battle[]
Yuri inquires as to how they're finding the way when only she has the map to their destination, and it is revealed that Charon's driving up to now was solely guided by her intuition. Yuri tries to get Charon to read the map, but she refuses to do so (and she can't read maps anyway). The showing up of some hooligans cuts the episode short, as Vergilius decides to give Mephistopheles a dessert.
1-7: The Trio[]
Pre-Battle[]
Sinclair and Yuri tries to teach Charon map reading, while Dante and Gregor have a chat in the back of the bus. Dante remarks how young Yuri is, while Gregor comments that she "wouldn't be on the youngest side, either", then commenting that some Wings used to "conscript anybody old enough to hold a knife". This draws Dante into inquiry about the topic of inter-Wing warfare, though Gregor then quickly breaks off with the remark, "Still, ignorance is a gift you should savor while you have it, if you ask me."
Post-Battle[]
Yuri and Sinclair continue in their attempt to educate Charon on basic geography skills, while Dante and Faust have a conversation about the construction of Mephistopheles. Dante remarks on Faust's oppressiveness in conversation, and her pride at being a "genius".
1-8: Pests[]
Pre-battle[]
Rodion calls to Gregor, seeing people with bug features from outside the bus window. Faust reveals their (and Gregor's) likely affiliation with the former G Corp, which gave its employees augmentations that would give them insectoid features. As the bug-like people are blocking the path to the L Corp. branch facility, Vergilius ushered the Sinners off the bus to "convince" them to let them pass. One of the G Corp. veterans seems to have recognized Gregor, who seemed to have been some center of propaganda for the ex-Wing.
1-9: Guides[]
Pre-battle[]
The Sinners arrived outside the remains of the LC branch facility, and waiting there are two other Grade 8 Fixers from Yuri's Office: Hopkins and Aya. The two welcome the party warmly, with Hopkins expressing surprise at seeing the Red Gaze (Vergilius) as their guide.
Vergilius then reveals that he won't be following the Sinners into the branch facility, citing that "it would be a little too free of challenge" if he was to get involved, leaving the Sinners to the guidance of the three Grade 8 Fixers.
1-10: Grade 8 Fixers[]
Pre-battle[]
Right before the Sinners enter the branch facility, Vergilius pulls Dante aside, cautioning them to not overly trust the Fixers due to them only being Grade 8 — low-rank drudges who are better suited to errands than being relied on.1-11: Branch D-02[]
Main article: Branch D-02
Enemies[]
Trivia[]
- There are several unused or moved content in Canto I which were replaced:[1]
- Faust found several objects from Branch D-02 after likely an assumed successful mission, one of which was a navigation tool with the voice of Yuri. It was installed for Charon, much to the chagrin of Gregor. (This was removed in place for a different scene involving the failure of obtaining the Golden Bough in which any reference of "Navigation Tool" was never mentioned inside.)
- Gregor hanging the gas mask that was used by Yuri on the windshield of Mephistopheles (which was later changed to an unnamed object named as a keepsake instead). Vergilius wonders if he had a bond with Yuri, to which he denied, instead mentioning that he had a sister of her age. Vergilius asked if it will get in the way, but Charon said no, instead keeping it on the windshield as it waved like a Christmas ornament.
- Dante's idea of trying to cheer the sinner up but gets put off by their mood was moved later than earlier. It was originally at the initially now removed cutscene.
